Buffalo Sabres Video Parody Fallout

Well, the Buffalo Sabres video parody I produced last weekend certainly hit a nerve in Buffalo. The video had over 18 thousand views on You Tube and over 600 comments. The early comments were mostly Buffalo fans telling me what a jackass I am. I can certainly live with that.

On Monday, the video link was picked up by Buffalo television (wivb.com) and placed on their website with the caption, "What Ottawa thinks of Buffalo". Combine that with three straight Buffalo losses and that's when comments here on my blog and on You Tube took a turn for the ugly. For the last four days I received hundreds of cranky emails and messages. On You Tube the amount of anti-Canadian and anti-American vitriol was making me uncomfortable so I took the video down tonight.

I just wanted this to be a fun thing for Ottawa fans to rally around. The images I chose for the video were obviously photoshopped, designed to poke fun at the stereotypes about Buffalo. It was the video equivalent of telling a Sabre fan his mother wears army boots then having him freak out on you for making such an accusation.

I'll let you in on a little secret, Buffalo. I don't really believe your mom wears army boots. I don't really believe your city is a dump. What I do or say is not indicative of "What Ottawa Thinks of Buffalo". I'm a radio guy.

Someone countered my video with a video of Ottawa, representing our city as one jammed with homeless people. It didn't phase me a bit because I know it isn't accurate. So if I'm just a stupid Canadian who's dead wrong with my representation of Buffalo, why all this fuss? Do what I did with the homeless video. Roll your eyes and laugh it off.
