I took a lot of grief from the emailers today for my take on the Ottawa Senators’ goaltending. Many people accused me of trying to stir up a controversy about Martin Gerber and Alex Auld. Well, nothing could be further from the truth. There’s no controversy. Auld should be the number one guy. End of story.
Most of the time, I preach calm. Don’t panic after one game. But Gerber is out of excuses. The one last defence for his shaky play has been removed. Most people said this goalie performs better when he’s not looking over his shoulder. Well, instead of proving that to be true, he rained all over his own grand opening Saturday. He was awful. And even when Gerber is good, he consistently appears unsure, skittish and jumpy.
Enough stumbling in goal, already. How many more years of mediocre to bad goaltending does this franchise have to endure?
Gerber had his chance at the front of the line. He’s had many chances. Time to give someone else a try. You’re next, Al. Whattya got?
Yesterday, Auld had plenty.
