Getting Carried Away

I know this has nothing to do with sports but one of the bright spots of the holidays this year was a chance to sit down and spend about an hour chatting with country music superstar Carrie Underwood. It would have been cool in any circumstance. I was especially appreciative since it was the first time she had spoken publicly and candidly about her engagement to Mike Fisher. The interview ended up all over North America, including Entertainment Tonight.

So how does a sports radio talking head in Ottawa land the interview that so many others across the world were clamouring for? Well, I’d like to tell you she’s secretly a fan of TGOR but that obviously had nothing to do with it.

It was an interview opportunity that just dropped in my lap. Here’s the flow chart. She’s marrying Fisher. Fisher is friends with and works out with Tony Greco. Fisher suggested she work out with Tony when she’s in town. She agreed to do an interview with Tony on his radio show, which I just happen to co-host.

First off, she’s extremely pleasant with none of the arrogance we’ve sadly come to expect from famous people. The interview itself lasted only about 25 minutes but she was happy to sit and hang with us for quite a while both before and after the interview. Underwood had just finished a workout with Tony and a Senator player’s wife. We all sat and talked about a range of subjects.

Finally, she plopped herself down in Tony’s office and was happy to talk openly about whatever we wanted. She was so interesting, likeable and down to earth I had half a mind to invite her along to the dinner party my wife and I were going to that night. I love celebs who treat average people with respect. It’s not a lot to ask but it’s still quite rare. Listen to the interview here.
